Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a two-step procedure that typically takes place over the course of multiple visits to our office. First, our team will thoroughly clear away all plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, as far down as the roots of the gums. We will then remove any hardened deposits of bacteria from the roots of the teeth, which will allow the gum tissue to healthily reattach to the teeth and protect the vulnerable roots from harmful oral bacteria.

Chao Pinhole Technique

The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique was developed and patented by Dr. John Chao. Today, it’s regarded as a highly effective method of treating gum recession, which is caused by gum disease. A special instrument is used to create small perforations in the gums that allow the gumline to be adjusted. Collagen strips will then be placed to help keep the newly adjusted gumline in place over the once visible dental structure, helping prevent harmful oral bacteria from attaching the roots of the teeth. This minimally invasive procedure requires no grafts, sutures, or even incisions.

Laser Periodontal Treatment

During scaling and root planing, we may also opt to use a soft tissue laser to help minimize bacteria presence within the mouth as well as remove any severely infected gum tissue. Instead of using a scalpel or sutures, the dental laser allows our periodontist to effortlessly vaporize the tissue as well as cauterize it, minimizing bleeding, healing time, and discomfort during the procedure.

Periodontal Surgery

For our patients who have more extensive symptoms of gum disease that need to be addressed to prevent the infection from spreading, our in-house periodontist provides a range of different periodontal surgeries as well. These procedures include flap surgery, which allows for the cleaning and repair of tooth roots, gum grafts to prevent further recession, bone grafting to add to the jawbone density, guided tissue regeneration to promote new bone growth, and crown lengthening to improve support for a new dental restoration. Our periodontist is also trained to place dental implants, which are used to restore smiles affected by tooth loss.

Gum Recontouring/Crown Lengthening

Gum recontouring and crown lengthening are two procedures that involve altering the gumline, but for different reasons. Gum recontouring achieves more aesthetic results by removing excess gum tissue, while crown lengthening removes gum tissue to help properly secure a dental restoration (like a crown or bridge) over a tooth. For both of these procedures, we utilize our soft tissue laser for a more comfortable experience during and after the treatment.
